LITTLE LEGENDS WINTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE POLICY

We at Little Legends are very excited to have our inaugural winter basketball season begin in January, 2021! This is especially true given that this past year has seen the vast majority of our kids not be able to play organized sports, so being able to get them back on the court is very exciting indeed.

Our excitement notwithstanding, any winter season that we have will be under new and unique circumstances. As always, we want to ensure that everyone involved, including our kids and their families as well as our coaches and referees, are provided a safe environment to participate in the sport they love. To this end, there are certain guidelines that we will adhere to in compliance with the rules dictated by Fairfax County Public Schools and the applicable authoritative government bodies,

Please review the following information that lays out the details of our Little Legends winter 2020-21 season:

DIVISIONS

How we ultimately proceed with divisions will be determined by the results of our registration, but our plan is to follow our standard division set up, which consists of the following:

· 3/4 Grade

· 5/6 Grade

· 7/8 Grade

· 9/10 Grade

Unfortunately, given the restrictions that we are operating under, we will not be able to offer our clinic or training for the winter season. It is our hope, in fact our plan, to start these up in the spring.

TEAM SET UP

As is our usual practice, we will allow pre-formed teams to register. If you register a team of 8 or more players, and make a single team registration payment, we will give you a 20% discount on the registration fee. We generally do not assign new players to pre-formed teams that register, although this may occur if there are less than 8 players. You may also register a partial team (e.g., 4 players) and have the remainder of the roster filled out through our “evaluation and draft process” (more on that follows).

Individual players who are not assigned to a pre-formed team are also welcome to register and we will assign you to a team. Given the guidelines we will be operating under, our “evaluation and draft process” will be different for the winter 2020-21 season. There will be no actual in-person evaluation process like we typically do. Instead, the league will carry out team assignments for all individual registrants. We will do so using the self-evaluation that you assign your son or daughter when you register. So please be accurate with your self-evaluation so we can try to create as well-balanced and competitive of teams as possible.

Each team must have two (2) coaches. This is a requirement of the county. This can consist of the regular coach and a parent. Both coaches much fill out a Little Legends coaching application. This requirement must be met as each team practice will require both coaches to be present.

Each player, coach, team volunteer, and referee MUST fill out a Little Legends Basketball COVID-19 Waiver to be able to participate in the Little Legends winter 2020-21 season. This wavier must be filled out before participation is allowed in any practice and/or game.

Each team must have its own instant thermometer to be used to check the temperature of all players and coaches before each practice and game. Each team is responsible for purchasing its own instant thermometer.

SCHEDULE

The Little Legends winter season will begin the week of January 04, 2021 and will run through March 14, 2021. We plan to offer each team a minimum of eight (8) games, and we do intend to have playoffs and a championship(s) within each division.

For the winter 2020/21 season, we will have practices and game both during the week (Monday-Friday) and Sundays. This deviates from our usual practice, but is necessary given the extreme lack of facilities available for use. Each team will have one game and one practice per week, with the exception being if there is a need to have byes and/or have doubleheaders (which is typically done when we have an odd number of teams in any particular division).

GAMES and PRACTICES

Details on practices and games are as follow:

Practice Guidelines

· Each team will have one (1) practice per week.

· Each practice will be for (1) hour. This is subject to change depending upon other applicable guidelines (e.g., if available gym space does not allow for the break required by the ensuing guideline then practice intervals may be reduced to forty-five (45) minutes).

· There will be a 15-minute “break” in between each practice. No team in a subsequent practice may enter the gym until the team in the preceding practice has exited the gym. The team in the subsequent practice must remain in their cars until the team in the preceding practice has fully left the gym.

· Practices will be limited to one (1) team per practice slot. This means that for practices only one (1) team will be in the gym at any given time.

· All players will be required to bring their own ball.

· Coaches should attempt to do drills that do not share basketballs and limit physical contact as much as possible. Non-basketball actions such as high-fives should be avoided. Each team will have the entire gym so the space should be used to this end.

· The sharing of basketballs (e.g., team drills) should be minimized as much as possible and the sharing of other equipment (e.g., pennies) should be avoided. Only coaches should handle other equipment used during practice (e.g., cones).

· Masks must be worn upon entry to the facility by all participants at all times, including players, coaches, and officials. This includes players who are actively practicing and/or playing.

· Coaches and players should bring hand sanitizer to use at a minimum before and after each practice.

· ONLY coaches and players are permitted in the gym for each practice session. No spectators (e.g., parents) are permitted in the gym during practice, and all parents/guardians are asked to remain outside in their cars.

· Two (2) coaches MUST be present for each practice session. Teams that only have one (1) coach present will NOT be permitted to practice.

· The temperature of each child and coach MUST be taken before each practice. Anyone with a temperature above 98.6 degrees will not be permitted to enter the facility and must leave immediately.

Games

· Each team will have one (1) game per week.

· Each game will be for (1) hour.

· There will be a 15-minute “break” in between each game. No teams in a subsequent game may enter the gym until both teams in the preceding game have exited the gym. Both teams in the subsequent game must remain in their cars until the teams in the preceding game have fully left the gym.

· At this point, no spectators are permitted in the gym during a game. We will revisit this as we get closer to game time and during the season, and will update this guideline as warranted, but at this time the only people permitted in the gyms during a game include:

· Players from the two teams playing in the game.

· Two (2) coaches from each team playing in the game (for a total of four (4)) coaches).

· Two (2) referees assigned to the officiate the game.

· Two (2) adults volunteers, one (1) each from the teams playing in the game. One (1) volunteer will be assigned to managing the scorebook and one (1) volunteer will be assigned to managing the game clock. These volunteers must be designated by each team’s coach prior to the game.

· Masks must be worn upon entry to the facility by all participants at all times, including players, coaches, and officials. This includes players who are actively practicing and/or playing.

· There will be no jump ball to start the game. The home team will begin the game by inbounding the ball under their basket (no press defense at this point).

· Players must not share water bottles.

· Players on the sidelines should socially distanced as much as possible.

· Coaches and players should bring hand sanitizer to use at a before and after the game and also during the game on the sidelines as much as possible.

· Coaches must bring the team thermometer to check the temperature of each player on their team.

· The home team is responsible for wiping down (i.e., sanitizing) the score table and clock before each game, while the visiting team is responsible for wiping down the score table and clock after each game.

· The home team provides the game ball, which must be wiped down (i.e., sanitized) prior to providing the game ball to the game officials. The home team must sanitize the ball during time outs and between quarters and at halftime.

· The temperature of each child, coach, and parent volunteer MUST be taken before each game by the respective team’s coaches.

· The temperature of each referee MUST be taken by the home team prior to the start of each game.

· Anyone with a temperature above 98.6 degrees will not be permitted to enter the facility and must leave immediately.
